Consolidation and Pore Fluid Pressure of Ursa Sediments, Deepwater Gulf

چکیده
15 We conducted uniaxial compression tests on whole core samples from the Ursa 16 Basin, deepwater Gulf of Mexico, to obtain the consolidation properties of mudstones. 17 We showed that specific volume (v = 1+e) (where e is void ratio) declines as an 18 exponential function of effective stress and we used this relationship to successfully 19 predict in-situ pressure from void ratio at IODP Sites U1322 and U1324. This confirmed 20 high overpressures near the seafloor at Ursa. Rapid sediment compression near the 21 seafloor drives fluid flow, impacts overpressure, and ultimately controls land subsidence. 22 A better understanding of this behavior will allow us to better image the subsurface 23 acoustically, better predict subsurface pressure, and more completely understand the 24 global water cycle.

Iodp Expedition 308: Gulf of Mexico Hydrogeology Site U1324 Summary
Site U1324 is the westernmost site drilled in the Ursa basin by Expedition 308. Of the three sites in the Ursa Basin, Site U1324 has the thickest sediment loading above the permeable Blue Unit. The principal objectives of drilling Site U1324 were to document rock physical properties at the location of maximal overburden in the Ursa Basin, measure in-situ formation temperature and pressure, docu...

Site U1322 is the easternmost site drilled in the Ursa basin by Expedition 308. Of the three sites in the Ursa Basin, Site U1322 has the thinnest sediment cover above the permeable Blue Unit. The principal objectives of drilling Site U1322 were to document rock physical properties at the location of minimal overburden in the Ursa Basin, measure in-situ formation temperature and pressure, docume...
متن کاملOTC 17957 Measuring Temperature and Pressure with the Temperature Two Pressure (T2P) Probe in the Ursa Basin, Gulf of Mexico: Development of a New Pressure and Temperature Probe for the IODP
We developed the Temperature 2 Pressure probe (T2P) to measure in-situ pore pressure and temperature in sediments at the base of the borehole. Tool development began in 2003, it was land-tested in 2004, and it was deployed on the IODP’s Joides Resolution drillship in June 2005 on IODP Expedition 308. During Expedition 308, we measured temperature and pressure in mudstones up to 300 meters below...
متن کاملGeotechnical in situ characterization of subaquatic slopes: The role of pore pressure transients versus frictional strength in landslide initiation
[1] Mineralogical composition and pore fluid pressure are the crucial controls for mechanical stability of watersaturated sediments. Their in situ measurements were undertaken in earthquake-triggered slope deposits in Lake Lucerne (Switzerland) in addition to geophysical characterization and laboratory index properties, shear and consolidation experiments on core. Two lithological units were id...
متن کاملThe Channeling (Microventing) Phenomenon in Young Marine Sediments
The objective of the present research is to explore the causes of microventing, a phenomenon generally occurring in cohesive sediments during their deposition and consolidation. Microvents are characterized by volcano-like formations, remnants of the expulsion of fluid and sediment along a vertical channel through the sediment layer. The size of these vent formations ranges from the order of mi...
